چکیده

. We compiled a suite of 490 heat flow measurements from the Pacific Ocean in areas with less than 85 m of sediment. Heat flow patterns at different basement ages vary with topographic relief. Areas with reliefs < 300 meters are conductively blanketed at 40-60 m.y. and may stop convecting at 70-90 m.y. Areas with reliefs > 300 meters are conductively blanketed at70-90 m.y. and convect out to > 90-110 m.y.

Non-linear stochastic inversion of 2D gravity data using evolution strategy (ES)

In the current work, a 2D non-linear inverse problem of gravity data is solved using the evolution strategies (ES) to find the thickness of a sedimentary layer in a deep-water situation where a thick sedimentary layer usually exists. Such problems are widely encountered in the early stages of petroleum explorations where potential field data are used to find an initial estimate of the basin geo...

Relationship between depth and age in the North Pacific Ocean

[1] The North Pacific contains active mid-oceanic ridges and the oldest, Jurassic (166.8 ± 4 Ma), drilled oceanic crust. Its bathymetry is therefore critical to studies of the applicability of thermal contraction models (e.g., the infinite half-space and cooling plate) to the subsidence of seafloor with crustal age. The bathymetry, however, contains seamounts and oceanic islands (e.g., Mid-Paci...

Constraints from Thorium/Lanthanum on Sediment Recycling at Subduction Zones and the Evolution of the Continents

Arc magmas and the continental crust share many chemical features, but a major question remains as to whether these features are created by subduction or are recycled from subducting sediment. This question is explored here using Th/La, which is low in oceanic basalts (<0 2), elevated in the continents (>0 25) and varies in arc basalts and marine sediments (0 09–0 34). Volcanic arcs form linear...

Evidence for thin oceanic crust on the extinct Aegir Ridge, Norwegian Basin, NE Atlantic derived from satellite gravity inversion

[1] Satellite gravity inversion incorporating a lithosphere thermal gravity correction has been used to map crustal thickness and lithosphere thinning factor for the NE Atlantic. Predicted oceanic crustal thicknesses in the Norwegian Basin are between 4 and 7 km on the extinct Aegir Ridge, increasing to 9 – 14 km at the margins, consistent with volcanic margin continental breakup at the end of ...

Influence of sediment input and plate-motion obliquity on basin development along an active oblique-divergent plate boundary: Gulf of California and Salton Trough

Transtensional basins have formed along the Pacific-North America plate boundary in the Gulf of California and Salton Trough region during Late Cenozoic time. Axial basins occupy a 50–60 kmwide belt along themainplate boundary, and change from sedimentstarved oceanic spreading centers in the south that are oriented perpendicular to long NW-striking transform faults, to oblique N-trending pull-a...
